Extended validation (EV) order, validation and issue process

Order process

In the order process, be sure that the requestor's data is similar in all those four sources. If they are not similar, the CA will request an update.

  • CSR (Organization name, address)
  • Reseller control panel ('Requestor' customer handle)
  • Domain whois ('Registrant' field)
  • Company registration documents

Validation process

Shortly after the order has been sent to the CA, the CA will send an e-mail to the requestor to confirm the receipt of the order. In this e-mail, a link to the document titled 'Acknowledgement of Agreement' is placed. This document should be filled in and sent to the CA signed by an authoritative person. The document can be downloaded here for the following CA's:

Internally, the CA will check domain data, order data and company registration data. If any discrepancies exist, the requestor will be asked to solve these before continuing.

The final step of the validation is a call from the CA to the Human Resources department of the requestor's company. In this call, the authority of the requestor is verified. A next call is done to the requestor himself, to check if all certificate's data are correct.

After this last validation step, the certificate will be issued within a few hours.

The total validation process depends on several factors, and normally takes between 2 and 10 working days.

Changes to the certificate

  • A normal reissue is free of charge
  • Change of address is equal to ordering a new certificate. The exact reason for this, quoting Jon Kerr (Symantec):
Verifying the organisation’s address is key part of the authentication service we provide with the certificate, if the customer is moving then we will need to re-authenticate the address again which is time and cost to us and they must purchase a new certificate for that reason. This could be justified by analogising that when you move house or office there are costs associated with doing that.
