Bulk transfer SIDN

SIDN supports bulk transfers for .nl domains between two registrars. Both a full and a partial take-over are allowed.

Summary

  • Check your account balance
  • Send us the signed forms
  • Wait for Openprovider to finish

The take-over is normally processed within one working day, but larger take-overs (10.000+ domains) might take longer; this will be planned between Openprovider and our customer.

Costs

The costs for a registrar take-over (partial or full) are € 50,00 excluding legal VAT. Apart from those costs, you are billed for the upcoming registration period. Details of this are listed in examples below.

Preparations

  • A filled and signed form full take-over or partial take-over from the SIDN registrar website
  • In case of a full take-over, a filled and signed release of information form
  • In case of a partial take-over, include a list of domain names to take over, both in plain text as in signed form
  • We recommend a list of expiration dates per domain (format: yyyy-mm-dd). For more information, refer to the pricing example below.
  • And do not forget to cancel your SIDN account by means of the cancellation form. This form should be sent to SIDN directly, at latest 2 weeks before the end of the quarter.

The take-over

  • After Openprovider receives all forms, we countersign and send the forms to SIDN. Normally SIDN takes care of the take-over within 1 working day.
  • As soon as the domains are moved to Openprovider, we will read the domain data and handle data.
  • To prevent loads of duplicate handles, we perform a merging operation. All remaining handles are created in Openprovider, with a reference to the original SIDN handle in the comments field.
  • Now the domains are imported into Openprovider
  • Finally an invoice line is created for the € 50 administrative fee
  • From now on, you can fully manage your .nl domains in Openprovider

Note that domains in quarantine are not transferred to Openprovider and will remain in your own SIDN registrar account.

Pricing example

Normally, when transferring a .nl domain, the remaining registration period is lost. In case of a bulk transfer, we take care of this remaining period: we will not bill the period between transfer and the end of the quarter, because you already paid that to SIDN.

There are three ways in which we can import the domains into Openprovider, listed in the order that Openprovider prefers. For the examples, we use the following data:

  • The price is € 10,00 per domain, which is € 2,50 per quarter.
  • Transfer date is February 1st, 2050
  • There are 365 domains, their expiration dates equally distributed over the year

Using your own expiration dates

For this method (preferred by Openprovider), we require a list with expiration date per domain. If you do not have this in your own administration, the easiest way is to download a domain report from the SIDN registrar website. This report contains the creation date of the domain and is perfectly usable for us.

All domains are imported into Openprovider with the expiration date that you provide (as long as this is between 'now' and one year from now). We will bill the quarters that remain until the expiration date immediately:

  • Domains with expiration date between now (2050-02-01) and the end of the quarter (2050-03-31) are not billed; those are 69 domains, price € 0,00
  • Domains with expiration date in the next quarter (between 2050-04-01 and 2050-06-30) are billed for 1 quarter; those are 91 domains times € 2,50, makes € 277,50
  • Domains with expiration date in the following quarter (between 2050-07-01 and 2050-09-30) are billed for 2 quarters; those are 92 domains times € 5,00, makes € 460,00
  • Domains with expiration date in the following quarter (between 2050-10-01 and 2050-12-31) are billed for 3 quarters; those are 92 domains times € 7,50, makes € 690,00
  • Remaining domains (expiration dates between 2051-01-01 and 2050-01-31) are billed for 4 quarters; those are 31 domains times € 10,00, makes € 310,00.

The total costs of this transfer will thus be € 1.737,50 plus € 50,00 for the administrative fee (all amounts excluding legal VAT).

Advantages of this method are:

  • Renewals distributed over the year; no huge amounts of renewals on one date
  • You can keep your own billing synchronized with the Openprovider expiration dates
  • You don't pay all domains for one year in advance

Disadvantages of this method are:

  • Loss of some registration period: a domain that you listed with expiration date August 1st has to be renewed on August 1st, and will expire on August 1st if not renewed. At SIDN, you could keep this domain until September 30th.

Randomly distributed over the year

This method is quite similar to the above method, but the expiration dates are defined by Openprovider and set to the last day of each quarter, splitting the domains into 4 parts.

Advantages of this method are:

  • Renewals split in 4 parts, not all domains have to be renewed on only one date
  • You don't pay all domains for one year in advance

Disadvantages of this method are:

  • Although distributed, it can still be a big number of domains to be renewed at one day. This implies the risk of mass expiration in case of balance problems
  • If you have your own per-year billing dates those are no longer synchronized with Openprovider

Similar to our above calculation, the example would result in:

  • 92 domains with expiration date 2050-06-30, 1 quarter, € 230,00
  • 91 domains with expiration date 2050-09-30, 2 quarters, € 455,00
  • 91 domains with expiration date 2050-12-31, 3 quarters, € 682,50
  • 91 domains with expiration date 2051-03-31, 4 quarters, € 900,00

Total costs for this operation are € 2.262,50 + € 50,00 SIDN administrative fee, excluding legal VAT.

All at once

This method puts all domains with expiration date end of quarter next year, in our example 2051-03-31. The risk of this method is that all renewals are concentrated on one date. If something happens with the account balance, it might result in loss of many domains, and the related reactivation costs.

The price for this operation, according to our example data, is 365 times € 10,00 plus € 50,00 SIDN administrative fee. This totals to € 3.700,00 excluding legal VAT.

Note on partial take-overs

If you are not SIDN registrar of yourself, you might have paid a longer period for the domains, mostly a year in advance. As we follow the SIDN rules, we will not take care of any additional period paid to the current registrar: we take the last day of the current quarter as 'paid until' date.

A possible way to prevent this lost period is doing four partial take-overs instead of one. Keep in mind that in that case you pay four times the € 50 administrative fee, and will require four times cooperation of your current registrar.
